Myanmar’s first mobile library
July 29th, 2013
Aung San Suu Kyi opens Myanmar’s first mobile library in Kawhum Township.
“We’re able to open this mobile library due to the good-will to assist in the development of the country. Education is the most important thing for a country’s development. The awareness of our youths will not become developed if they are only content with lessons taught in school. That’s why we want the youths to have a reading habit,” Suu Kyi said at the opening ceremony of the mobile library yesterday.
On behalf of the Japanese donors, Natsuo Miyashita, who is a friend of Suu Kyi, said, “I see that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is working with a vision for the future of the children in Myanmar. We plan to increase these mobile libraries.”
Based on Suu Kyi’s wishes and suggestions, Japan-based Hino Company donated two mobile buses for the Daw Khin Kyi Foundation mobile library. The foundation is named after Suu Kyi’s mother Daw Khin Kyi.
The library will start its operation on July 29 and start offering services to 21 villages in Kawhmu, according to Dr Thant Thaw Kaung, director of mobile library project.
The mobile library currently has over 15,000 books on cultivation and livestock breeding technologies for the general public, children books and other fictions and non-fictions books.
The library also offers computer training classes and English languages classes.
“We have been collecting the books and training the staffs for the mobile library project since two months ago. We can see that there are many benefits if we surely work on this project,” said Dr Thant Thaw Khaung.
